Jobs and Employment for Baby Boomers

If you plan to continue working after you move to Florida, or if you wish to start a second career, there are opportunities abound in Florida. If you like your current job, ask your manager if there might be an opportunity for you to continue working there by telecommuting from your new home in Florida. You may have to take a cut in hours or pay to make it work, but it might be worthwhile to continue work that you enjoy.

Looking for something new? If it’s part time work you are after, check the classifieds in the local paper where you are moving. Some baby boomers choose to take seasonal work during the busy holiday sales season, while other prefer to work year round. Some Florida retirement communities even hire residents to do things like maintainance, security patrols, and other jobs.

This is your new life. What you choose to do with your time is completely up to you. Just make sure you fill it with things you enjoy.

In addition to local papers, don’t forget to search online jobs portals such as Monster.com and hotjobs.com for opportunities that might be available. Also, aginghipsters.com and careerbuilder.com have partnered up to create an online job portal geared specifically to baby boomers. Visit aginghipsters.com and click on “Careers” for more information.

Community Service

The volunteer rate for baby boomers is the highest of any age group. Invariably when you are ready to move to Florida, it will not be your parent’s retirement with time spent solely on the golf course, napping in a hammock, or playing bingo everyday. You are likely to want to spend at least part of your time working or volunteering for a worthy cause. Luckily, there are plenty of opportunities for you to get involved in community service in Florida. Whether you choose to help out at a local school part time, join the local chapter of the Red Cross or United Way, or help build homes for Habitat for Humanity, your time and experience will be highly valued and appreciated.

As you probably already know, you’ll feel great about yourself for doing it. Studies have shown that getting involved in volunteer work increases life expectancy in part because the social interaction improves your quality of life. Get involved!
