The St. Joe Company is Florida’s largest private landowner, owning approximately 650,000 acres primarily located in Northwest Florida’s Panhandle region.
The St. Joe Company is a product of the Great Depression when they were able to accumulate their vast land holdings for just dollars an acre. At that time nobody saw the value that the Panhandle region of Florida would one day hold. But St. Joe is now poised to take advantage of their situation, and despite the real estate downturn the are in a great position.
St. Joe currently has several communities under development. Communities include Water Color, Wild Heron, WaterSound, WindMark Beach, SummerCamp Beach, Southwood, RiverTown, Victoria Park, and Artisan Park.
St. Joe is also trying to attract wealthy second and vacation homeowners to the region by relocating, expanding, and upgrading the Northwest Florida – Panama City International Airport. Shares of St. Joe recently spiked when they announced a deal with Southwest Airlines to operate 8 flights daily out of the airport. As a sign of their commitment, St. Joe has agreed to cover fuel costs if Southwest fails to break even on ticket sales for these flights.
