Wimauma is a place that most people…even those who live here in Florida…have probably never even heard of.
But in the Florida retirement world, it is a big name and a hotbed for 55+ communities.
Wimauma was founded in 1902 when the railroad came through the area. Legend has it that the name Wimauma is a combination of the names of the daughters of the town's founder, Captain C.H. Davis: Wilma, Maude, and Mary.
Not everyone agrees with me but the way I pronounce it is “WHY-mama“.
The key thing with Wimauma, and why I think several 55+ communities have been built here, is that it's close enough to bigger cities like Tampa and Bradenton that you can get to them relatively easily when you want to, but you're not stuck paying big city prices.
Downtown Tampa is about 30 minutes to the north, and Bradenton is just about 35 minutes to the south. Tampa International Airport is about 45 minutes away, and getting to the Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport will take you about the same amount of time.

Valencia Lakes is a 55+ community located in Wimauma, about halfway between Tampa and Bradenton.
