Coastal Retirement Living at its Finest in Englewood

by Ryan Erisman | Updated: April 19, 2025

Stump Pass Beach State Park in Englewood, FL

Englewood is a popular retirement destination located in Southwest Florida. Retirees like it because they can enjoy a coastal retirement location but the home prices and cost of living tend to be a little lower than they are in places like Sarasota, Fort Myers, and Naples.

Let's take a look at some other factors that make it a great place to retire.

Location

Englewood is located just south of Venice and west of Port Charlotte. Part of it sits in Charlotte County and part of it is in Sarasota County.

The nearest major airports to Englewood are the Punta Gorda Airport, which is about 30 miles to the east, and Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport, which is 43 miles to the north.

Englewood History

The Nichols brothers developed the area in the late 1800s, first as a lemon grove, but when especially cold winters in 1894 and 1895 killed all the lemon trees, they pivoted to making Englewood a mecca for wealthy tourists. The name Englewood came from their hometown neighborhood of Englewood in Chicago.

Cost of Living

Englewood's cost of living is just about even with the national average, and it is about 3% lower than the average cost of living in Florida. Even though home prices have gone up here over the last few years just like they have all over Florida, you can still get a better bang for your buck here than in more well-known places like Sarasota, Naples, and Fort Myers.

Englewood Weather

Like most places in Southwest Florida, Englewood has hot and humid summers and mild winters. Here's what the average temperatures look like throughout the year in Englewood:

  • Spring (March to May): 60°F to 80°F
  • Summer (June to August): 75°F to 90°F
  • Fall (September to November): 70°F to 85°F
  • Winter (December to February): 55°F to 75°F

Things to Do

Port Boca Grande Lighthouse

There are a handful of parks in Englewood. You can hit the beach at Chadwick Park or Stump Pass Beach State Park, or explore nature at Lemon Bay Park and Environmental Center.

Englewood is a popular destination for fishing and boating enthusiasts. Charter a fishing trip or rent a boat to explore the local waterways and enjoy the abundant marine life.

Locals like to visit the Englewood Farmers Market held on Dearborn Street every Thursday morning from October through May. You can find fresh produce, local crafts, baked goods, and more.

At the Englewood Museum you can learn about the local history and heritage of Englewood and the museum showcases artifacts, photographs, and exhibits related to the area's past.

Another idea is to take a 30-minute drive south to Boca Grande and explore the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse and Museum. It offers fascinating insights into the area's maritime history and also features exhibits on local wildlife.
