Crystal River Retirement Guide

by Ryan Erisman | Updated: October 16, 2022

Crystal River is widely known for its population of Manatees.

Crystal River is located right on the Gulf Coast of Florida just a little over an hour north of Tampa, a little over an hour south of Gainesville, and about and hour and a half west of Orlando. This area is commonly referred to as “The Nature Coast” because of the abundance of parks, preserves, and wildlife, and it is also one of the best places to get up close and personal with some West Indian Manatees.

Crystal River is also known for all of the natural springs that produce warm water year round. This is what attracts all of the manatees, and also what produces some of the best natural environments in all of Florida that are open for locals to explore freely.

Crystal River History

Human life in Crystal River tracks back as far as 500 BC. At that time, the area was home to many Native Americans that were known for building large mounds of discarded shellfish shells. However, the area was abandoned prior to being discovered by European settlers.

During the era of the Civil War, the turpentine business was big in Crystal River. That was followed by the discovery and production of phosphate during the time of World War II. Today, the area is known for having some of the best tarpon fishing in the world and being a calm and relaxing place for nature lovers to retire.

Take a look at Northwest Cape Coral in Lee County and Punta Gorda in Charlotte County. Both on the Gulf Coast and far enough South to stay warm in the winter. We have had our second home here for almost 7 years and will retire here.

We are exploring options for a second home in Florida. We are spending a month at the Villages in January and wonder if we should look at any other sites. Any info would be appreciated.
    Thanks

It’s a little further inland than Chrystal River, but Rainbow Lake Estates over in Dunnellon is a nice community. My mom lived there for several years before my Step-Dad retired and they loved it. Houses are in the $150K and up and Lots from $15k. Dunnellon is a nice little town and Mom and Dad were members of the Rainbow River Club there. I went on several Pontoon Boat tours of the Withlacoochee river there and loved it each time. After Dad retired they moved to Brooksville to Clover Leaf Farms Mobile home park. Mom loved living there until she passed. Dad loved it too but only got to be there for a few months as he died shortly after they moved there. If you are looking for something affordable either of these would be a great place to look. I think I’d go more for Clover Leaf if I was looking.
