Where is Fort Myers?

This amazing city is the hub of activity in Southwest Florida and is located only 10 miles from the Southwest Florida International Airport. If you are looking for the perfect community along the southern Gulf Coast of Florida, Fort Myers is the place where you want to start your search!

The community is actually located a bit inland from the Gulf along the Caloosahatchee River. The closest interstate highway is I-75, which runs just east of the city and can take you south towards Naples or north towards Port Charlotte and then up to Sarasota.

Just west of Fort Myers is where you will find the popular destinations of Pine Island, Cayo Costa, Captiva, and of course, Sanibel Island.

History of Fort Myers

Fort Myers was originally settled in 1866 when Manuel A. Gonzalez brought his family here from Key West. It became home to one of the first forts along the Caloosahatchee River and was an important location during the Seminole Wars.

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, the area gained popularity when both Thomas Edison and Henry Ford built winter homes in Fort Myers. Quite a few local landmarks still bear the names of these two American legends.
