2019 Hurricane Predictions / Virgin Trains / Mullet Tossing

by Ryan Erisman | Updated: April 6, 2019

Every year around this time, we Floridians start to listen for some news out of Colorado. Wait…what? Why would Floridians be interested in news coming out of Colorado? Because Colorado State University is where the hurricane season predictions come from. Here's what they predict for this year. – Weather.com

Speaking of hurricanes, some homeowners in the town of Mexico Beach (in the Florida Panhandle) who lost their homes in Hurricane Michael, are questioning whether or not they can even afford to rebuild (even if they had insurance!), owing in part to the stricter building codes their new homes would be required to adhere to. – The Wall Street Journal

Trains played a big role in Florida's early days. Virgin founder Richard Branson is betting on their role in Florida's future as he invests bringing high-speed rail to Florida. – Sun-Sentinel

Even if you've never been to Pike Place Fish Market in Seattle, you've no doubt seen the fish throwing that goes on there. Well here in Florida, we've got a mullet toss happening later this month that puts anything else you've seen to shame. – Only in Your State

According to the Florida Rambler, millions of people visit Orlando and miss the very best part. That's because in addition to all of the theme parks, Orlando is also a great base for discovering the authentic Florida of clear cold springs, gnarly cypress knees in mysterious swamps and hiking trails under majestic arching live oaks. – Florida Rambler

Boynton Beach is abuzz with the news of the latest 55+ community, Valencia Sound, grand opening set for Saturday, April 6. Don’t miss the chance to get in on the ground floor of the newest luxury 55+ community and take advantage of pre-construction pricing! – Valencia Sound

“Key Biscayne was an Eden-like island several hundred years ago, a pre-Columbian heaven. It was the center of civilization for the Tequestas, a small tribe of sea-savvy Indians who fished and whaled the crystal waters of the Florida Keys.” I really enjoyed reading this article on the history of Key Biscayne, and I think you will too. – Florida Backroads Travel

You've probably heard plenty about homeowners associations while looking at Florida real estate, but have you ever heard of an “underwater” homeowners association? It's actually a Miami-area effort to turn neighbors into climate-change advocates, block-by-block. – Miami Herald

My friend's beach bar, Racing's North Turn in Ponce Inlet, is in the running for 2019 Best Florida Beach Bar, and when I visited this website to vote for them I discovered that it's a pretty cool site for helping people discover the quintessential Florida beach bar, and thought you might enjoy. – Florida Beach Bar

Speaking of bars, I got out from behind the computer screen and went to check out a cool bar my son has been wanting to go to (it's kid-friendly before 8pm) called Trader Sam's at Disney's Polynesian Resort. Here's a video I found about the place (fast forward to about the 1:30 mark when they go inside and you'll see the cool decor, drinks being lit on fire, etc.):
